Sugar Cane in the Raw

We knew today was going to be a good day when breakfast was moved back to 8:00 instead of 7:30. We rolled out of the hotel parking lot around 9:00 and were on our way to Lajewetek. We had two teams today: construction and medical clinic. But before we separated we had a few minutes when we were sitting on the side of the road. The entire trip we have all wanted to try some of the sugar cane, sugar water in a stalk pretty much. Robert allowed us to try some of his, and once we had some we had to get more. Some of the team went across the street to buy a whole stalk of sugar cane. Let’s just say, there is nothing ladylike about eating this native treat. We felt like barbarians, ripping part of the fibrous, juicy stalk off with gnashing of teeth. Barbra said she felt as though she was chewing splinters. Delicious splinters. You might be able to equate the sugar cane with very fibrous celery. Soon after we enjoyed the sugar cane we parted company, the construction crew to Lajwatek and the medical crew to Lapinyoloyo.

We thought going to Lagutu was an off-road jungle experience, but traveling to Lapinyoloyo was by far the most exciting. Rumor has it that the 18 passenger van got some nice air on the footpath which turned into a treacherous road less traveled. If you want to do some real mud bogging, come to Africa. The potholes and inclines looked suspiciously like mountains and gorges. We bottomed out at times, sliding through mud holes for about 20 kilometers on a barely used dirt road with overgrown trees and brush. At times we may have had moments of anxiety as fleeting thoughts of getting stuck with no life in sight crept into our minds, but prayer always brings comfort. Many were praying…hard. With 1 km to go we were forced to abandon the bus and take the rest of the trek on foot.

As we were arriving, we were passing all the children. Usually they are lined up waving at us, but this time they were walking by us rocks in their hands with smiles from ear to ear. We found out they were carrying rocks to drop in the mud holes so the bus could get through, which, eventually, it did. They continue to be the examples of serving with excellence even at a young age. Greg says he is going to move his family here so his kids will behave more like these children.

Over 300 adults and children came to the medical clinic today, with 13 receiving Christ. Praise God. The last two were sisters, both named Agnes. We expanded our treatment with Aaron finding his new calling. Apparently, Aaron is destined to change professions. If a new OB/GYN practice opens near Wilmington soon, don’t be surprised if it is his…

The construction crew had a busy day as well. Barbra and McKinley switched from the medical crew so they could make a few bricks. Sam took a video which accurately portrayed the intensity of brick making. It is not for the faint of heart. After making a batch of bricks we were called to tea: an absolute must in Northern Uganda. The team is planning on starting a new tea trend upon our return. Ashley and Eric were our masons today. The bricks have now been completed for the schoolhouse kitchen and the foundation has now been laid. After a few hours of strenuous labor we went to the well to clean off the grease and grime. The cool water was extremely refreshing after working in the hot African sun.

The sun turned into a downpour at the end of the day, postponing the Jesus film to be shown in Lajwatek today. This gave us an opportunity to fellowship with each other as a team, fellowshipping and catching up on the details of what God has done, which was awesome and inspiring. Ashley misses the late night Mirinda toast with Whitey, but this does not curb his obsession with the drink.

Hello!

So Aaron, I have got to hear about your new calling! I keep thinking to myself "did he deliver a baby"? I need details, details, details!!! I look forward to hearing that story:) So from the looks of things it appears that all is going well there. That's awesome!! I'm praying for you guys and I'm excited to hear how you experienced Africa this trip. I hope each of you has an awesome day!! Aaron, Aidan said last night that you are special to him and that you are a sweet Daddy and he misses you when you go far away. He's ready to send me next time so you can stay home with him. Too funny huh? He says he wants you to stay home with his wonderful children. He says he loves you, adores you and knows you can do this. What a gift he is to us!! Eli speaks of you too and of course loves you. I love you and hope that the rest of your trip is great. May God grow you beyond your wildest dreams!! Remember the moments and to live in them fully. The video clip was great. It will be good to see it again at church today. Thank you team! Have a great day honey. I/we love you!!!

Tonia and Ashley I love you guys too!

I love waking up and reading about your days in Africa! We miss you very much Greg and McKinley. Your dad texted me about you sharing a devotion, McKinley, and I am so proud of you :) I wish I could be with you both. We are getting ready for church - I can't wait to hear Harriet this morning - she is such an amazing woman. I know you are proud of her, Tim. The kids worked really hard around here yesterday and I took them to Sonic and to see Dolphin Tale. It was a very sweet movie. I think the kids might now want us to take them to visit Winter in Clearwater (I wouldn't mind, either). It has gotten quite chilly, a very welcome change. I feel like we need to go camping; I can smell the campfire already.

Greg, although I now know about Jeana's flowers (way to go, Ashley, that was nice) and I was feeling a little sad I had not gotten a card or flowers I remembered you told me, before your left, that you hadn't done those things, you did, however, leave me a gas card, and you quickly presented me with a card from Walmart. You said I was to use it before the end of the month because the gas would be 10 cents a gallon cheaper if I did. Well, Greg, I just never made it over there so I am feeling pretty convinced that, since Jeana got flowers, I should go do something for myself, maybe, if I'm feeling generous, share it with the kids, too. Don't worry, I'm just pondering the idea - I should know something by later on today.

The big boys did some work for Ms. Eva yesterday and were very excited that she gave them $140. They also did Mr. Mike's yard with some additional work he asked them to do. We might need to start borrowing from them soon. Chris is in town so they enjoyed his
company yesterday - he has gotten so much taller. You will be glad to know that AnnaRebecca put on long jeans (cords) and wore them for quite a while yesterday, I couldn't believe it (oh, and a vest sweater). Simon & Lydia were so sweet helping me clean - they did a great job. When we got home last night from the movie (the bigger boys and Anna did not go) Isaac commented on how good the house look. I was surprised Isaac would even notice, but he did.

Isaac and Nathan purchased airsoft guns and I have already confiscated them. Thursday night after 9pm they took the guns across the street and were shooting each other in the dark in the backyard. I took recycling out and could hear the shots and saw a silhouette dash across the backyard of your office. I called them home and they didn't seem to understand why they needed to permission to be out at that time since it wasn't their bedtime. After explaining why I thought all was good. Well, yesterday, after they told me they were working (we were all suppose to be working) they come in the house about twenty-five minutes later with masks on panting for air. I asked why they were playing airsoft when they were to be doing the yard. "We are, we are," they replied "Well, we are getting ready, too." I now have the guns :)

Missing you and counting down the days to your return.

Hey babe. So you are forever the Mirinda King. So funny.

Tell Tim and Sam church went well this am. From what I heard Harriets message was awesome. Didn't get in but she felt God leading. So good.

Well we feel we are over the hump. Just left church and your parents came and got boys so I could get groceries in peace :-)
Man I miss you so much this time! So glad to hear all the lives being changed and adventures you guys are having.
I love you so much. The boys are so sweet and when they know that I am getting ready to cross a threshold of patience lost they ease up and kick in to serve and love. They are great! They are so pumped to see you. We literally have 3 countdowns going. As if one is going to show you getting home earlier. Ha.
Oh your humor is missed. You keep me grounded. When things seem tough you crack a joke that makes me laugh or you pump up music and we just dance it off. You are such a blast and boys clearly know I am not as "Fun" as daddy!

we love you and pray for you all the time. Tell mom and Aaron we love them so much!
All our love....
